So who actually pays for a tariff? Start with the company that brings the goods into the country.
It pays the tariff at the border, in cash. Then it decides how much of that cost to pass on to you.
Studies of the 2018 US tariffs found most of the cost landed on American buyers, not on the exporting countries. That surprises a lot of people.
Here’s why. If a shop can’t buy the same thing cheaper somewhere else, the importer has little choice but to raise its price.
So the tax that’s meant to hit another country often shows up on your receipt.
